Joseph Comellas, born and raised in New York, frequently visited the museums and galleries in New York City. This experience influenced Joseph at an early age to study art and begin a life long journey as a professional artist.

Joseph moved to Austin, Texas with his family at the age of 15. He continued studying and developing his art under the direction of artist, Amado Pena. Joseph was selling his artwork professionally in galleries and show throughout Texas by the age of 16. He attended South West Texas State University on a full paid art scholarship.

In 1982, Joseph moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico after being drawn here on a previous visit with Pena in 1978. He continued to further his education, attending classes at The College of Santa Fe.

Joseph shows and sells his work to collectors world wide who frequently visit Santa Fe, New Mexico. This international audience is truly a blessing in the art and life of Joseph Comellas. The longevity in the market has allowed for a constant development and growth as an artist and from that a unique body of art has emerged.

The Santa Fe landscape with all its sensual shapes, organic forms and dramatic lighting defines the painting of Joseph Comellas. These paintings that depict mountains, mesas and buttes, arroyos and rivers flown with abundant water speak volumes about that sense of place and peoples journey through that place in time and history.
